Extra-Curricular Achievements

The children of Ballyglass have been very busy developing their skills outside of the classroom. The Junior and Senior Quiz team competed in the Kilchreest NS Quiz in January. The Junior team came second after a tie-breaker at the end. The Senior team ended up in fourth place. Then in the Gort Credit Union quiz, both teams finished in 3rd place. There were some very tough questions on the night, and they represented the school excellently. Well done to all involved!

The 5th and 6th class students held a Spelling Bee in the classroom as part of the Eason's/2FM National Spelling Bee. Brión emerged the winner in the school and went on to represent the school in Scoil Einde in Salthill for the County Finals. He finished 3rd in the county, which was a brilliant achievement!

Finally, Shauna has been busy competing in sports and athletics events thoughout the year. Last weekend, she went to Clontarf where she was awarded Athlete of the year on the track. Well done Shauna!

The poet, Gabriel Fitzmaurice, comes to visit.

Today Gabriel Fitzmaurice came to our school to talk to us about writing poems and he told us some stories and riddles. His poems were really funny and he told us stories about his children when they were younger.  He also told us about his years of teaching and about visiting other schools around Ireland.  He went into each classroom and read some of his poems. When he had finished going to each classroom, we all went into Ms.Tannian’s room to get pictures taken with Gabriel. When they finished taking pictures, Grace thanked Gabriel for coming to see us and for reading some poems to us. He also signed the school copies of his book and the visitor book. We really enjoyed listening to Gabriel’s poems.

Friendship Fortnight 2013

We have just finished Friendship Fortnight for 2013. During the fortnight, all the children did nice things for each other, and they wrote this on leaves and stuck it to our Friendship Tree each day. Take a look at how many nice things they did for each other!

The children listened to songs like "You got a friend in me" and "Lean on me", and they talked in each class about how to be a good friend. They worked in pairs and in groups and they made posters for the Poster competition. The winners of the Competitions for each class were:

Junior Infants: Rebecca
Senior Infants: Alicia
1st Class: Mathys and Helena
2nd Class: Ava and Stella
3rd Class: Shauna and Lily
4th Class: Neil
5th Class: Róisín
6th Class: Grace

The standard was very high and all the children put great work into their posters. Well done to everyone involved. Here are the winning posters. They will be displayed around the school for the next few weeks.
